Thuja, a hedge plant but also a cure for us humans, with the mother tincture or essential oil we extract from it. In the North American continent and in Asia, countries of origin, it is a very widespread genus especially in the spontaneous state, in Europe and in other areas of the world where it finds a favorable climate, it has become popular all the same and is therefore cultivated with love in the gardens, especially in its varieties with more affordable dimensions and suitable for flower beds and artistic compositions, road borders or roundabouts. But let's see better why, in the case of Tuia, it is better go over the hedge and understand how it can help us to get better health.
Tuia: characteristics
With the name Thuja we mean at least a dozen evergreen coniferous plants characterized by a rapid enough growth rate so as to reach in a short time even the two meters high. Maximum two meters, but most of the time, as we will see, the Tuia stops well before.
His erect stem supports the foliage which can have a pyramidal or flame-shaped shape, the brown-orange bark very often crumbles, forming scales, the leaves are instead in the shape of scales, very small and at the same time very dense. To get an idea, they look like the cypress leaves but dark green intense except in winter when they turn yellowish.
In addition to flowers, the Thuja produces small oval or rounded pine cones: it depends on the variety, as well as the color that goes from bluish black to light green. When these pine cones turn brown, they soon distribute small seeds.
Thuja in homeopathy
Only the fact that the Tuia is also called “arbor vitae”, Tree of life, must make us understand how it can be useful for our well-being. The most precious part are the leaves: they contain one abundant dose of vitamin C.
One way to use this vitamin source is to treat the leaves to make a tea. In fact, an infusion is obtained from aromatic and healthy flavor, strong enough but not unpleasant, a taste already known to the Native Americans who, so it is said, gave it to the first explorers suffering from scurvy.
Tuia: mother tincture and essential oil
The mother tincture of Tuia, as well as essential oil, they represent an excellent and practical, as well as economic, homeopathic remedy for eradicating problems of different types. For example, a Tuia treatment is often recommended in the case of skin diseases such as moles, blackheads, comedones, styes but also if we suffer from stress, tension or insomnia.
The essential oil, for the treatment of warts and swelling of the palate, but also for colds, bronchitis, intimate problems such as vaginal secretions, it is an effective remedy. Online you can buy a 10 ml bottle for less than 10 euros, prepared with tuja needles.
Tuia: hedge plant
If we're fine and we don't have any of these problems, well for us, let's use it the thuja to compose a beautiful hedge. In fact, in addition to singly, this coniferous plant can be sown to form an impenetrable green barrier. For example, among the most widespread species is the Thuja occidentalis, also called American or white cedar, which comes even at 20 meters, with small green or yellowish leaves united in aromatic tufts.
In spring it also produces flowers that can be red or yellow-brown. Another common variety is the Nigra, with dark foliage and resistant even in winter, and then there are the Golden Globe, particularly for its golden foliage, the Smaragd, loved because decorative and bright green, and Rheingold with golden yellow foliage enriched with pink and orange shades.
Thuja in pot
If we want to cultivate the Thuja in pot, for pleasure or for necessity, in the absence of a garden, it is important that we place it in a sunny place and it is better if we do not live near the sea because it hates brackish air. In this case it is better to opt for a plant of modest sizes, starting to grow it from its seeds, which are also available on Amazon for 16 euros.
Among the varieties of Thuja to choose from, with reduced dimensions, for pots, there are the Little Giant, rounded and very dwarf, the Emerald green, with small and slow-growing leaves, and the Aurea nana which, as the name states, is small and with golden leaves.
