A new genetically modified corn from Bayer Crop Science has been launched on the market. It is a type of corn with 'genetically stacked' genes that makes it resistant to the spraying of up to twelve different pesticides.
MON 87429 corn is resistant to toxic aerosols of: glyphosate, dicamba, glufosinate, 2,4-D and eight herbicides of the aryloxyphenoxypropionate group ('FOP'). The seed is also coated with the systemic neonicotinoid insecticide that kills bees .
MON 87429 is the only culture that has developed tolerance to both dicamba and 2,4-D to date. As such, it is a clear demonstration of the failure of herbicide tolerant cropping systems, and glyphosate tolerant crops in particular.
Herbicide-resistant transgenic seeds (particularly glyphosate) are the most widely used in the world. They were launched with the promise that the use of herbicides would decrease, and on the contrary, they have multiplied their use.
The continued use of a single herbicide-based agricultural model as the sole method of eradicating weeds has fueled the widespread development of glyphosate-resistant “weeds”, forcing growers to increase the number and variety of herbicides needed to control them.
This increased use of pesticides in food production has serious negative environmental consequences. These same pesticides are also implicated in serious health problems, such as cancer, chronic diseases, and impaired childhood development.
Since the technological model based on transgenic glyphosate resistant seeds is crumbling, biotechnology corporations believe that they will solve the problems that it has generated in agriculture, by stacking more and more herbicide resistance genes each time. more toxic ... and it is only a matter of time before new resistance to these new herbicides emerge.
This new event is a very short-term solution for farmers who have adopted agrobiotechnology as the productive matrix.
Bayer (owner of Monsanto) has applied for the release of MON 87429 corn to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Food Approval Agency of Canada and EFSA in the European Union.
The GMO-Free New Zealand Network (GE-Free NZ) is very concerned that this new GMO event may expose consumers in New Zealand and Australia to higher levels of toxic chemicals . The same concerns are held by the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network . Many of the chemicals are likely carcinogens, others are endocrine disruptors and cause various health problems and damage to biodiversity.
The GE-Free NZ Network is of the opinion that the authorities will inevitably approve the product, despite the absence of safety data on the potential impact of GMO corn absorbing multiple chemicals, and without investigating whether there are unintended mutations when combining the edition of genes with transgenic engineering .
With simpler transgenic events, FSANZ evaluations have been based on insufficient research, inaccurate data, and purely theoretical. FSANZ selectively ignores and ignores data that reveals problems with the events being evaluated, says GE-Free NZ spokesperson Calire Bleakley .
“Allowing food to be sprayed with a cocktail of toxic herbicides that have a history of chronic health effects is irresponsible and endangers public health”, “Any claim by FSANZ and the ministerial forum that the new variety of corn has been subjected to authentic safety tests is false and irresponsible in the extreme, ”adds Claire.
The data cited in Bayer's request comes from Monsanto, who, after the information revealed in the latest lawsuits against him, cannot be trusted.
Genetically modified foods, highly processed and grown with pesticides are known to weaken our immune system and make us more vulnerable to disease, so we must put efforts in this type of food production.
